The beauty of the bus life is that you're never tied to a single spot, and during your stay here you'll have the chance to travel between any of the local kite spots at the drop of a hat. The bus operates in between two of Costa Rica's best kite spots: Bahia Salinas and Lake Arenal. Bahia Salinas is an enclosed crescent shaped bay in the far northwest of Costa Rica, and is generally considered to be the best place to kiteboard in the country. The bay is protected by an outer reef, which means the water on the inside is flat (with some small chop during high winds), and on the edge of the reef you can find some small waves too. Wind strength during the high season (Dec-April) averages at 18-23 knots, getting stronger throughout the afternoon (beginners may feel more comfortable kiting earlier in the day when the wind is slightly lighter). The beach is large, with plenty of spacious launching spots- just keep an eye out for sharp rocks and shells. Consider wearing booties to protect your feet. Lake Arenal is located 2 hours inland from Salinas Bay. Winds here are somewhat stronger and can get pretty gusty- especially when it blows above 25 knots (which is common during the high season). The water conditions are comparably easy, with large flat areas dotted with some gentle waves that don't break. Thanks to Costa Rica's tropical climate, the air and water temperatures remain warm throughout the entire year, so you won't need to worry about bringing a wetsuit.
Costa Rica is famed for its stunning natural landscape, vast national parks, rugged primary jungle, and rich marine life. The northwest of the country, which is where the best of the kitesurfing spots are located, has all of these things in abundance- but that's only the beginning. Get ready to have your days filled with exploration of the little local towns and colourful fishing villages, and your nights filled with fresh, exotic food and the company of the kindhearted locals. Discover hidden waterfalls and hike along the ridge of a dormant volcano. Explore the coastline by kite, and swim in the warm, clear waters of untouched beaches. Squeeze every drop of enjoyment you can out of this beautiful part of the world; with all you need inside the four walls of your own kite bus, the world is your oyster.
The Bustel is your base to do- well, whatever it is that you want. Go kiteboarding at world class locations, where you'll meet with other likeminded nomad folk whose love of the wind and water have also brought them here. When you feel as though you've had enough of one spot, jump back in your home-on-wheels and head for the next one. Costa Rica's northwest is the cream of the crop when it comes to kiteboarding, but head down the winding coastline towards the smaller towns of Malpais and Santa Teresa and you'll find a wealth of beaches perfect for testing out your skills on a surfboard. Onboard the bus you'll find equipment for surfing, skateboarding, snorkeling, and spearfishing.
Off the water, there's plenty else to see and do. Nature lovers will be in their element: imagine that 25 percent of Costa Rica's land is made up of protected national park- that's the highest ratio of anywhere in the entire world! In effect, there's miles and miles of beautiful hikes, lush jungle, and pristine seascapes just waiting to be explored. But the best part? Living in the bus means you'll be able to explore and experience absolutely all of it.
If you're the sort of person who prefers a little more structure to your vacation, we have just the thing. By booking an experience with The Bustel, you'll have the option to request a driver for the bus, a full tour, and an adventure package that will take you all around the country. For all you wind-crazed water lovers, we offer a special kiteboarding package that offers an all-inclusive experience (accommodation, transport, lessons, and equipment rental). The most unique thing about this package is that you'll have the benefits of any professional kiteboarding package (so lessons from a qualified instructor and access to quality, up-to-date gear) but you'll have the added excitement of being able to sleep right at the kite beach in your own converted bus. We have Cabrinha and Harlem Kites with Cabrinha bars, Crazyfly boards and Mystic harnesses available for rent.
Should you wish to, the host is available to drive the bus and take you touring around the most beautiful parts of the island. A knowledgable kitesurfer and in-the-know local, he's the best tour guide you can find.
There are two main airports in Costa Rica. The largest airport, International Airport Juan Santamaria (SJO), is located in the capital city, San Jose. This airport is a 5-hour drive away from Salinas Bay in the northwest, and can be accessed by public transport with relatively little hassle. However, you may find it more convenient to fly into International Airport Daniel Oduber Quiros (LIR) in Liberia, which is less than an hour's drive away from Salinas Bay (although this airport is significantly smaller and doesn't serve as many flight routes).
This converted school bus has been designed to accommodate a maximum of 6 people. The inside space is comprised of a separate bedroom with a queen size bed (fits 2 people), a toilet, an outdoor shower, solar power, a fully equipped kitchen (with a fridge, stove, countertop, and a working sink), as well as two sets of bunk beds which accommodate a further 4 people. We also provide extra hammocks and tents which can be pitched outside to accommodate extra guests.
