Spot guidance

The peak months of the windy season in Vietnam is December to February, so in January it's a pretty safe bet to expect the winds that make this spot famous as a kitesurfing destination. In Mui Ne, the first spot we go to, gets average 15-25 knots of side-onshore wind. Usually the higher numbers in the afternoons. Mui Ne Bay has a shore break with little to big waves depending on the swell, and you kitesurf in the sea beyond this break. It's a safe place even for beginners because there is sandy beach to have theory lessons before going in the sea, body dragging with an instructor. Advanced riders can show off their tricks further out in the open sea, or just enjoy riding the swell in the warm water and sunshine. Strapless wave riders won't get left out either because at the next bay over there are longer breaking waves for shredding. Most kite sizes used here are 7-12m Phan Rang, our second destination on the trip, gets 20-35 knot winds over a flat water lagoon with an outer reef break. So again, any level of kitesurfer can enjoy this spot! Most kite sizes used here are 5-9m

The Destination

Mui Ne has an amazing community vibe, with plenty of facilities and infrastructure to make a great holiday. It's a small town set along one big stretch of road that includes resorts, restaurants, bars, kite centres, shops of all kinds, markets, fishing village, even shops and facilities for locals like the dentist or pharmacies. Mui Ne has a vibrant mix of locals and expats, and the great thing is that whoever you are, there is everything you need in this one town. Most importantly, the kitesurf community (which mixes both locals and foreigners) is very welcoming, so you will feel right at home. Phan Rang is 3 hours away by tranfer from Mui Ne, and is a world away. It's far more quiet and secluded, but you are closer to nature and will be staying right on-site at the kite centre - metres from the clear lagoon. Nowhere else you'd need to be!

The Experience

This trip will take place from 14 to 24 of January starting in Ho Chi Minh City, first taking a private transfer to the first stop Mui ne for 5 nights, then a transfer to Phan Rang for the next 5 nights, then a transfer is included back to Ho Chi Minh City.

*Please note that there is the option to add an extra night on the 13th if international flights arrive too late on the 14th to take the transfer on the same day. We will depart Ho Chi Minh City at approximately 14.00pm.

At our first destination, Mui Ne, you will be staying in a comfortable 3-start resort with breakfast included, right on the beach and a few minutes walk from the kite station, where your gear storage is included in the package. The centre is comfortably laid out right on the beach with facilities for its clients such as wifi, showers, storage, and a chill area. You can kite, pause for a fresh coconut between your sessions, and then gather with us for an apres-kite session debrief over a few beers watching the most incredible tropical sunsets!

As the evening rolls in, we will show you our favourite places to eat, because there are just so many options to choose from. We haven't included lunches and dinners in the price, because food is one of the cheapest things in Vietnam with so many options to suit different tastes, so you can have the freedom to either join us for group dinners, or to head off and explore a bit of the culinary scene yourself! There are also a few lively bars where we can end the nights on high vibes.

After the buzz of Mui Ne, we will venture on to Phan Rang which is a more secluded spot. You will really feel like you're on a kitesurf adventure here. Based in accommodations in the form of cute wooden bungalows right on-site of the kite centre right by the water's edge, each day will be a show of the locals performing their big-air stunts as well as you kitesurfing your own heart out over the flat water lagoon in 25+ knot winds. The kite centre facilities include a spacious lounge area, cafe and restaurant where your breakfast is included, and a kite shop. You probably won't even need shoes for the whole 5 days here.

Throughout the whole trip you will be guided by us who have been coming to Vietnam for over 10 years and are well connected with the main kitesurfing community and business owners. By joining our trip you will meet plenty of our friends and be integrated into the local community, and make new and lasting friendships, connected by kitesurfing or not! Above all, Vietnam is simply a magical country and we want to show you its warmth and colourful culture from its people to the nature.

joão is your host for this experience and will provide you with all the information needed.

I am João, 38, a Portuguese native who is passionate about outdoor sports, especially water sports such as surfing, SUP, sailing, windsurfing, hydrofoiling and kitesurfing. I love to explore new kite and surf destinations, meet different cultures and share one of my passions; kitesurfing.

Tell us more about what brought you to the path that you're on, the "why" behind your business and your offering(s), what excites you most about the work that you do, etc...?

I graduated Outdoor Sports and Tourism in Portugal (2008) and I am a certified kite and sailing instructor from FPVela and IKO with 14 years of traveling and teaching experience in countries like Portugal, Vietnam, Brazil, Indonesia, Dominican Republic, Italy, Montenegro, philippines and columbia. In 2007 my own kitesurfing journey began right here at “Lagoa de Óbidos”, so it is a pleasure to have come full circle and start my own project right here; making my passion my profession.
