With an average temperature of 30°C (86°F) in the summer, Cabarete is the perfect choice for this kite camp series as the wind is extremely consistent due its thermal effect. The wind is predominantly from the east, as is the swell. Cabarete is consistently rated as one of the best kite destinations in the world for a reason. With access to excellent flatwater oases, beautiful beach breaks, and perfect barrels over the reef, it’s obvious why we chose to make Cabarete our destination choice for our annual camp with Kevin.

A small surf town located on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, Cabarete offers all the sea side charm of a paradise get away. Small little restaurants line the beach serving everything from fresh fish, grilled meats, and fresh fruit and amazing rum drinks. The town comes alive in the evenings with many local bars and restaurants proving excellent venues for dancing the night away. In Cabarete you will have no choice but to slow down and enjoy life on island time.

  • Day 2: Video review and analysis in the morning, followed by afternoon riding sessions to put what was learned in video review into practice

  • Day 3: Advanced kite-flying lesson with guest coach Micheal Gebhardt. Focus on looping, pivoting, stall, inversion recovery, luff recovery, among other things.

  • Day 4: Flat water session in the morning to work on technical maneuvers like transitions, big airs, jibe, tack, etc. The afternoon will be a downwinder from La Boca back to Playa Encuentro. Distance of approximately 15km.

  • Day 5: Riders choice. A majority vote will decide the activity. It can be something that has already been done, or something new like a down wind session from Las Canas back to Kite Beach. Eat: Lunch and dinner is included as this is very much part of the experience. A lot of information gets passed at meals, and you actually get to know Kevin off the water in a more relaxed environment. We eat fantastically fresh during the day, and at night we enjoy the best dinning that Cabarete has to offer. We enjoy the best dinning in Cabarete at such restaurants as Bliss, Eze Bar, and Natura Caba to name a few.

Gear: Please bring your own. We'll have some Slingshot & Naish gear for demo, but in limited quantities. Water shoes are also a good idea as we may decide to go surfing at Encuentro, or hiking the 27 water falls. If you are a beginner surfer you may need to stand on the reef. Booties are good to bring in case.

Media: We have a professional photographer joining who will shoot photo and video to be used in the coaching program. These photos and a personal video are available for purchase for $120USD. After the end of the trip a selection the best photos will be shared on a Drop Box.

Pro Athlete Profile

Kiteboarding has been Kevin’s life, right from that very first day back in 2000.

In 2001, after seeing the professionals competing at the Kiteboarding World Cup in Holland, his dream of becoming a pro became his goal and his driving force. From that moment on he dedicated everything he had to training, and with the support of his parents and sponsors, Naish and O’Neill, managed to win his first Dutch Championships in 2003. It was onwards and upwards from there, as he set his sights on his very first World Cup, and at age 14 he managed to secure a top 10 spot.

Kevin’s first major event title came in 2009, when he won the Freestyle World Title. Having picked up a serious knee injury in 2010, and being side-lined for a year, Kevin fought his way back to fourth position in 2012.

One of his fondest memories was having his friends and family supporting him from the beach at the 2014 King of the Air event. This resulted in new motivation to push it to the max and win the 2015 instalment of Red Bull King of the Air.

After 14 years of hard work and high flying, Kevin still gets the same rush every time he launches his kite.
